Box Score FREDERICKSBURG, VA. - Coming out on top in a clash of ranked squads, the No. 20 Swarthmore women's tennis team took down No. 30 Mary Washington College by a score of 5-4 on Saturday, Apr. 8.
Starting off strong in doubles play, the Garnet won two of three matches, going into singles up 2-1. Despite struggling early on in their singles matchups, three crucial victories pushed the Garnet over the edge, securing their 5-4 win.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Doubles:
- The Garnet came out of the gate swinging in doubles matches, seeing wins from the duos of first year
Kathleen Shiffer/junior
Erica Stutz (8-2) and junior
Oviya Kumaran/junior
Spencer Watts (8-6) in the No. 2 and No. 3 seeded matchups respectively.
- Swarthmore's only loss came in the No. 1 slot, when the pair of sophomore
Nathalie Williams/senior
Crystal Xu fell 8-4.
- With the wins, the Garnet went into singles up 2-1 over Mary Washington.
Singles:
- Struggling early, the Garnet lost in the No. 1, No. 3 and and No. 4 matches, with Williams, Stutz and Kumaran all falling.
- Undeterred by the setbacks however, Swarthmore got back on track. First year
Lisa Messier captured a point for the Garnet with her 6-2, 6-2 win in the No. 6 match, followed shortly by first year
Lola Diaz's three set 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 victory in the No. 5 match.
- Shiffer battled back and forth in the No. 2 match, with the contest going into a third and final set. With her teammates cheering her on, the California native triumphed in a third set tiebreaker, coming out on top 6-4, 3-6, 7-6(7-5) for the Garnet's fifth and decisive point.
