Men’s Lacrosse Stuns No. 5 Gettysburg In OT, 12-11

GETTYSBURG, PA. - Taking down the No. 5 team in the country and a Centennial rival, the Swarthmore men's lacrosse team felled No. 5 Gettysburg College on Saturday, Apr. 8, defeating the Bullets in overtime by a score of 12-11.

Offensively, the Garnet were helmed by juniors Carter Strauch and Von Mabbs, with each tallying three goals for Swarthmore. Strauch came up especially clutch for the Garnet, firing a laser past the Gettysburg keeper for Swarthmore's decisive overtime score.

Proving a brick wall in goal for the Garnet, first year Ryan Pretzer effectively stifled the usually potent Bullet offense, notching 14 saves while facing down 34 shots.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Garnet struck first, taking a 2-0 lead just three minutes into play thanks to hammering shots from Von Mabbs and first year Clay Almgren.

- While Gettysburg responded less than a minute later, a goal from first year Owen Hoffman opened Swarthmore's lead back up to 3-1.

- Both squads closed out the first quarter trading scores, with both Hoffman and Von Mabbs finding the back of the net for the Garnet. At the break, the scoreboard read 4-3 in favor of Swarthmore.

- While both offenses struggled to kick off the second quarter, Gettysburg finally found paydirt halfway through the period, tying the game at 4-all with 7:42 left to play. Two Garnet goals from Strauch and senior Jackson Brosgol stretched Swarthmore's lead back out to 6-4, but a pair of Gettysburg strikes closed that gap back to 6-all, a scoreline that held into halftime.

- Gettysburg opened up the second half on a run, tallying five straight goals to go up 11-6 over the Garnet. Swarthmore were finally able to stem the bleeding with two late goals from Almgren and Von Mabbs, closing out the third quarter down 11-8.

- While Swarthmore's defense stood firm, holding Gettysburg scoreless in the fourth, the Garnet carried their offensive momentum into the final period. Swarthmore notched three goals in the fourth quarter to tie the game at 11-11, including a clutch put back from first year Rex Mabbs with just 24 seconds left in regulation to force OT.

- The Garnet acted quickly in extra time, needing just 34 seconds for Strauch to find the back of the cage and secure Swarthmore's 12-11 upset of the Bullets.

- With the win, the Garnet are now 9-1 on the season, 3-0 in conference play.
