SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The No. 16 Swarthmore College men's lacrosse team pulled out another miraculous overtime comeback in a back-and-forth battle against Washington College, 14-13, to remain the only unbeaten squad in the Centennial Conference on Wednesday night. The wild contest featured eight lead changes and ten ties.
After scoring the game-winning goal against No. 5 Gettysburg College,
Carter Strauch played hero once again with his second-straight game-winning overtime goal. Strauch scored 20 seconds into overtime with an assist from
Jackson Brosgol.
Nolan Ohrman played one of the best games of his young career as he tallied a career-high seven points on two goals and five assists. His goal total matched a season-best, while his assist total marked a new high for the first-year attacker. Brosgol also played a well-rounded game with a season-high five points on three goals and two assists.
In addition to the game-winning score,
Carter Strauch also collected his sixth hat trick of the season with three goals and an assist. The Garnet also received multi-goal performances from
Rex Mabbs,
Von Mabbs and
Clay Almgren.
Ryan Pretzer made several pivotal saves between the pipes as all 14 of his saves mattered in a back-and-forth thriller. The Garnet have relied heavily on their first-year keeper, who has came up huge with double-digit saves in all four conference victories.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Shoremen came out on top in a tightly-contested opening quarter. Ohrman tallied the first score with 11:50 remaining. Washington then responded with a pair of unanswered scores to take the lead, before the Garnet regained the lead with a pair of their own. Carter Strauch scored the first goal off an assist from Almgren, while Rex Mabbs scored from Brosgol. The Shoremen then ended the stanza with consecutive scores to take a 4-3 lead.
- Momentum swung in Swarthmore's favor to start the second quarter as Brosgol and Carter Strauch both added goals to put the Garnet ahead, but Washington answered again with back-to-back scores to go back in front. Von Mabbs then tied the game with an assist from Ohrman before the Shoremen tied the game with seconds remaining in the half.
- Swarthmore took the lead with back-to-back goals to open the third quarter. Almgren scored the first tally with an assist from Ohrman. Brosgol then scored on a one-timer from Rex Mabbs after the first-year set him up with a beautiful pass from behind the net. Ryan Pretzer answered at the other end with an incredible pipe-to-pipe stop to preserve the Garnet lead. However, the Shoremen would eventually rally for three consecutive scores to take their largest lead, 10-8. Brosgol then provided some much-needed relief with his third goal of the game off an assist from Carter Strauch to pull within one goal at the 1:59 mark, 10-9.
- Washington built themselves a two-goal cushion with the first goal of the fourth quarter at the 11:25 mark. The Shoremen then immediately scored off the face off to take a three-goal advantage. Rex Mabbs got the Garnet back on track with an assisted score from Ohrman. Von Mabbs then found the back of the net with another assist from Ohrman to pull within one goal. Ohrman then added a goal of his own as he beat the goalie between the legs for the equalizer with 3:52 left. Washington captured momentum with a go-ahead score at the 1:25 mark to take a late advantage. With the game on the line, Matthew Martinez helped give Swarthmore a chance with a crucial face off victory, which set up a crafty goal from Almgren on an assist from Ohrman to force overtime.
- Carter Strauch scored his second-straight overtime game-winner with an assist from Brosgol just 20 seconds into overtime to secure another dramatic victory for Swarthmore.
