CHESTERTOWN, MD. - Traveling out of state for a Centennial doubleheader, the Swarthmore baseball team split a pair of games against Washington College on Saturday, Apr. 8, losing the first 7-6 in ten innings and triumphing in the second by a score of 9-3.
Â
Offensively, the Garnet were headed by first year Aiden Sullivan. Batting third in both contests, Sullivan notched two hits and two RBIs in the first game, while tallying two hits and a run in the second.
Â
From the mound, Swarthmore saw a stellar outing out of first year
Noah Potholm. Starting game number two, Potholm kept Washington's bats in check, allowing seven hits and just three runs while striking out eight batters over eight innings pitched.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED - Game One (L, 7-6)
- The Garnet drew first blood, scoring once in the top of the first when sophomore
Max Roffwarg was driven in by Sullivan. Swarthmore grew their lead to 3-0 in the top of the second, seeing senior
Kirk Terada-Herzer and sophomore
Benjamin Buchman cross home.
- The Shoremen finally responded in the bottom of the second, putting up two runs to narrow the Garnet's margin to just one at 3-2.
- While both squads were held scoreless in the third and fourth innings, Swarthmore extended their lead to 5-2 in the fifth. After reaching first on an error, Roffwarg tallied his second run of the game thanks to a Sullivan single, followed shortly by senior
Austin Burgess being brought home from third when sophomore
Matthew Silvestre grounded into a double play.
- Unable to keep Washington's offense dormant however, the Garnet conceded one run in the seventh and two in the eight, evening the game at 5-all.
- While Swarthmore seized back a 6-5 lead in the top of the ninth thanks to a sacrifice fly from senior
Emmet Reynolds bringing in junior
Jett Shue, Washington leveled the field at 6-all in the bottom of the inning, forcing the contest into extras.
- Despite first year
Xavier Taylor reaching second in the top of the tenth, the Garnet were held without a run. Washington took advantage of Swarthmore's struggles, scoring in the bottom of the tenth and taking the game 7-6 over the Garnet.

Nate Jbara stealing home.
- Washington chipped into Swarthmore's advantage in the fourth, closing the gap to 2-1, a scoreline that would hold through the next three innings.
- Despite each squad pitching a shutout in the fifth, sixth and seventh, the Garnet finally broke through in the eighth. After loading the bases with one out, Sullivan walked home when Jbara was hit by a pitch, extending Swarthmore's run total to three. A double from first year
