Women’s Lacrosse Downed By Ursinus In Close Centennial Matchup

COLLEGEVILLE, PA. - Playing in the second annual Anita Deasey Memorial Cup, the Swarthmore women's lacrosse team fell to Ursinus College by a score of 15-12 on Wednesday, Apr. 5.

Offensively, the Garnet were helmed by a three-pronged attack, composed of sophomore Isabela Bloomquist, senior Emma Holub and sophomore Sophie Finkelstein. Both Bloomquist and Finkelstein notched a team-leading three goals on the night, while Holub put up a stellar stat line of two goals and three assists.

In goal, junior Helen Stafford proved a rock for Swarthmore, tallying 13 saves for a save percentage of .464.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Garnet struck first less than two minutes into the contest, with first year Annabel Stifler hammering a shot past the Ursinus keeper to give Swarthmore an early 1-0 lead.

- Swarthmore extended their advantage to 2-0 just two minutes later, as senior Cassidy Marquis slipped the ball into the back of the net thanks to a nice pass from senior Elizabeth Zack.

- Ursinus struck back, scoring three straight to seize a 3-2 lead over the Garnet. While Zack tied the contest at 3-all with a goal of her own, another Ursinus shot made the scoreboard read 4-3, a line that held to the end of the quarter.

- The Bears extended their lead in the second period, finding paydirt six straight times to go up 10-3. A goal from Finkelstein finally stemmed the bleeding for the Garnet, as Swarthmore went into the break down 10-4.

- Undeterred by their deficit, the Garnet scored four straight to kick off the second half, narrowing Ursinus's advantage to 10-8. With Swarthmore unable to maintain their momentum however, the Bears secured some breathing room at the end of the third quarter, notching three goals to go back up 13-8.

- Looking to stage a fourth quarter comeback, the Garnet answered an early Ursinus goal with three daggers of their own, bringing the game within three at 14-11 with 6:32 left to play. Unfortunately, Swarthmore's run stalled out there, as both teams scored only one more time for a final tally of 15-12.
