ANNAPOLIS, MD. - Competing in the Centennial Conference Finals, the Swarthmore women's tennis team fell to Johns Hopkins University by a score of 5-1 on Sunday, Apr. 30.
Despite two early losses, the Garnet fought back in doubles play, capturing a win in the No. 1 seeded match to cut their deficit to 2-1 going into singles. Unfortunately, Swarthmore came up short in singles play, battling hard but dropping three matches and ultimately falling 5-1.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Doubles:
- The Garnet suffered two early losses, with the duos of junior
Oviya Kumaran/junior
Spencer Watts (8-2) and first year
Kathleen Shiffer/senior
Crystal Xu (8-4) both tasting defeat in the No. 3 and No. 2 seeded matches respectively.
- Bouncing back from the early setbacks, Swarthmore claimed a hard-fought point in the No. 1 slot, as the pair of sophomore
Nathalie Williams/junior
Erica Stutz took down their Blue Jay Opponents 8-6.
- With the win, the Garnet slashed Johns Hopkins' lead in half, trailing just 2-1 heading into singles.
Singles:
- Swarthmore once again struggled early, seeing Kumaran (7-5,6-2) and sophomore
Lara Geib (7-6,6-3) fall in straight sets.
- Not content to simply roll over, the Garnet fought back. Despite falling in the first set, first year
Lola Diaz hammered her way to a 6-2 win in the second, forcing a third and decisive set. Unfortunately, Diaz's heroics weren't enough, falling in the final set and surrendering the fifth and decisive point.
