SWARTHMORE, PA. - Competing in the Centennial Conference Championship semi-finals, the Swarthmore women's tennis team defeated Haverford College by a score of 5-1 on Friday, Apr. 28.
Starting off strong, the Garnet claimed two of the three doubles matches, carrying a 2-1 lead into singles play. Swarthmore performed even better in singles, seizing wins in three straight matches to close out their 5-1 victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Doubles:
- The Garnet got things rolling out of the gate in doubles play, seeing wins in both the No. 1 No. 3 seeded matches, as the duos of sophomore
Nathalie Williams/junior
Erica Stutz (8-3) and junior
Spencer Watts/junior
Oviya Kumaran (8-4) came out on top.
- Swarthmore's only loss came in the hard fought No. 2 slot, where the pair of senior
Crystal Xu/first year
Kathleen Shiffer fell to their Ford opponents in a tight 8-7 match.
- Despite the stumble however, the Garnet carried a comfortable 2-1 advantage into singles play.
Singles:
- Picking up right where they left off, the Garnet exploded out of the gate in singles matchups, seeing a quick 6-1, 6-2 win out of Williams. Competing in the No. 1 seeded match as the No. 1 ranked player in the Atlantic South Region, Williams defeated the No. 3 player in the region, capturing Swarthmore's third point of the afternoon.
- Swarthmore followed up their early singles success with more wins. Kumaran took home a 6-2, 6-2 victory in the No. 3 slot, before sophomore
Lara Geib captured the Garnet's fifth and decisive point in the No. 5 seeded match, taking down her opponent 6-1, 6-3 and securing Swarthmore's 5-1 victory.
UP NEXT
With the win, the Garnet advance to the Centennial Conference Championship Final. They will travel to Johns Hopkins University for the match on Sunday, Apr. 30 at 1 p.m.
