Women’s Lacrosse Drops Defensive Showdown Against Washington College

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The Swarthmore College women's lacrosse team dropped a dramatic defensive showdown in their home finale versus Washington College, 7-6, on Wednesday afternoon.

The Shorewomen narrowly edged out the Garnet in a game dominated by defense. Swarthmore's defense was exceptional in the second and third quarters as they held the Shorewomen scoreless for nearly 40-straight minutes. Helen Stafford made a game-high 11 saves to headline an outstanding defensive effort against a quality Washington squad.

Isabela Bloomquist and Sophie Finkelstein were responsible for all six of Swarthmore's goals. Finkelstein opened the scoring with the first three Garnet goals, while Bloomquist tallied the team's final three tallies.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Both offenses raced out to a fast start to open a half that was dominated by defense. Washington College netted the first goal just 30-seconds into the game, while Finkelstein provided the equalizer a minute later. Lillian Lewis found Finkelstein cutting towards the net to set up the quick response. Washington then answered back with a go-ahead goal at the 11:17 mark, before adding another score moments later. Both teams were held scoreless for the remainder of the stanza, 3-1.

- After going over 20 minutes without either team scoring a goal, the Garnet tallied the lone score of the second quarter with 2:30 left. Swarthmore turned excellent defense into offense after stopping the Shorewomen's attack late in the second quarter. Finkelstein picked up a loose ball from 20-yards out and beat Washington's defense for Swarthmore's second goal of the game, 3-2.

- The Garnet carried momentum into the second half with the opening goal of the third quarter from Finkelstein, who scored the first three goals for the Garnet. After a draw control from Elizabeth Zack, Swarthmore quickly took the lead with a goal from Bloomquist. Swarthmore then possessed another draw control from Francesca Richardson, which led to another quick Bloomquist score. Moments later, Bloomquist tallied her third-straight goal to put Swarthmore ahead by three scores. Washington eventually broke their scoreless drought with 1:36 left in the third stanza, 6-4. The Garnet held the Shorewomen scoreless for 38 minutes.

- The Shorewomen opened the fourth quarter with a pair of goals to tie the game. Washington then tallied their fourth unanswered score to take the lead with 4:16 remaining. Swarthmore gave themselves a chance to respond after a couple strong defensive stands, but were unable to connect on an equalizer.
