Softball Splits Senior Day Double-Header with McDaniel

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The Swarthmore College softball team split its double-header with McDaniel College on Saturday afternoon. The Garnet lost the opener 8-4 before responding with a 3-1 victory in the finale.

Emily Bertrand led the way with an excellent pitching performance in the finale victory. The sophomore tossed a complete game while holding the Green Terror to just one run.

Iris Barone and Kate Hart drove in an RBI to lead the Garnet offense in the second game, while Alex Simon paced the offense with a three-run double in the opener.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Garnet struck first with three runs in the third inning. Jordan Jackson opened the frame with a single, while Caterina Reed reached on an error and Barone singled on a bunt. Simon then came through with a bases-clearing double to left field, 3-0. 

- McDaniel responded with a run in the fourth inning, before taking the lead with a four-run fifth inning, 5-3. 

- The Green Terror built on their advantage with one run in the sixth and two runs in the seventh inning. Swarthmore then threatened in the bottom of the seventh, but were only able to get one run across. Jackson started the rally with a leadoff single and eventually scored on a double by Cassidy Cheong, 8-4.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- After a clean first inning, Bertrand worked out of a jam in the second inning to strand a pair of baserunners. The Garnet then overcame a pair of errors in the fourth to escape the inning unharmed. 

- McDaniel threatened in the fifth inning as they plated the game's first run on an RBI single. Swarthmore then responded with a run in the bottom half on a sacrifice fly out from Barone, 1-1.

- The Garnet took the lead with two runs in the sixth inning. Swarthmore plated the first run on a passed ball before adding a second run on a Hart sacrifice fly, 3-1.

- Bertrand shut the door with a relatively easy seventh inning. The sophomore allowed one two-out baserunner on a walk, but settled down to strike out the next batter.
