Game Recap: Baseball |

Baseball Takes Opener and Battles to Tie in McDaniel Double-Header, Reynolds Homers Twice

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The Swarthmore College baseball won the first game of their double-header with McDaniel College before battling back to tie the Green Terror in Saturday afternoon's finale. The second game was called in the seventh inning due to lightning in the area.

The Garnet offense pounced on the Green Terror pitching staff with an 11-1 victory in the opener. McDaniel plated the game's first run before Swarthmore answered with 11-straight. Aidan Sullivan notched his fourth homer this week, while Emmet Reynolds mashed a pair of dingers. Austin Burgess was also on base five times to headline an impressive offensive performance.

Liam Alpern was excellent on the bump in eight innings of work - allowing just one run on four hits with five strikeouts. Joshua Rankey also played a huge role in quieting down the Green Terror's bats in game two. Rankey tossed 5.2 innings of relief, while allowing just two runs.

After spotting McDaniel seven runs in the opening frame, Swarthmore dug out of their early deficit to force a 9-9 decision. Swarthmore spread out their offensive output with a pair of RBI from Matthew Silvestre and Emmet Reynolds. Sullivan also had another remarkable game as he went 4-for-4 with a double and an RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED

- Alpern's only blemish on a magnificent afternoon was one run in the first inning. After allowing a leadoff triple, the sophomore surrendered a sacrifice fly to allow the game's first run. However, Swarthmore's offense had their ace's back with two runs in the bottom half on a two-run shot from Reynolds.

- Alpern provided a shutdown frame in the second inning before tossing another 1-2-3 frame in the third. The Garnet offense found its rhythm in the fourth with a two-run inning to take the lead. Burgess knocked in the first run with a triple and then came around to score on a Joe Radek ground out, 4-1.

- The Garnet ace came through with another shutdown inning as he retired the side in order in the fifth inning. Swarthmore then added another run in the bottom half on a Silvestre single, 5-1.

- Swarthmore kept adding runs with a Nate Jbara sacrifice fly in the sixth. The Garnet then busted the game open with a five-run seventh inning. Sullivan started the rally with his fourth homer of the week, while Reynolds added his second homer of the game on a solo shot. Burgess touched home on a balk to score a run, while Benjamin Buchman and Max Roffwarg capped off the big inning with RBI singles, 11-1.

- Alpern closed out his day with a 1-2-3 eighth inning. The sophomore lowered his season earned run average (ERA) to a conference-best 1.44 ERA. No one else in the conference has an ERA below 2.00.
