Early Deficit Proves Too Much For Baseball Versus Haverford

SWARTHMORE, PA. - Taking on their longtime Centennial rivals, the Swarthmore baseball team fell to Haverford College by a score of 15-9 on Tuesday, Apr. 25.

Offensively, the Garnet were led by first year Aidan Sullivan and sophomore Max Roffwarg. A crafty baserunner, Roffwarg put up one hit and four runs for Swarthmore, while Sullivan hammered in a stat line of two hits, two runs and two RBIs.

From the mound, the Garnet saw stellar outings from juniors Jack Fitzgerald and Casey Jordan. Fitzgerald allowed just one hit and struck out two batters over one inning pitched, while Jordan blanked the Haverford side, tallying a strikeout over one inning pitched.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- After holding the Haverford order without a baserunner in the top of the first, the Garnet kicked off the scoring in the bottom of the inning. After Rofffwarg reached on an error and Sullivan hammered a double to deep center field, both runners were driven home by a double from sophomore Matthew Silvestre, putting Swarthmore up 2-0.

- The Garnet extended their lead to 3-0 in the second, with junior Jett Shue crossing home thanks to an RBI single from sophomore Max Beadling.

- The Haverford bats would not be kept silent forever however, as the Fords put up three runs in the third to tie the game at 3-all. Haverford took their first lead of the game in the top of the fourth, tallying seven runs for an 11-3 margin over the Garnet.

- Swarthmore was able to chip away at their deficit in the fifth, as Roffwarg scored for the second time to cut Haverford's lead to 11-4.

- The Fords put up two runs in both the sixth and seventh, stretching their advantage to 15-4.

- Despite trailing Haverford by 11 runs, the Garnet offense showed it still had some fight left in it. Swarthmore notched three runs in the seventh, as a two-run shot from Sullivan and a triple from Silvestre that put him in prime position to score on a sacrifice fly from senior Emmet Reynolds shrank their deficit to eight.

- Building on that success, the Garnet scored twice more in the eighth, seeing Beadling cross home and Roffwarg score for the fourth time.

- However, Swarthmore's late momentum proved too little to catch Haverford, as the Garnet fell to the Fords 15-9.
