COLLEGEVILLE, PA. - Dropping the second game in their series against Ursinus College, the Swarthmore baseball team fell to the Bears by a score of 11-10 on Friday, Apr. 21.
Â
Offensively, the Garnet were captained by a monster performance from first year
Aidan Sullivan, with the designated hitter putting up a stat line of three hits, two runs and four RBIs in an outing that included a career high two home runs.
Â
On the mound, Swarthmore saw a stellar outing from first year
Gabe Elliot, with the righty allowing no hits and striking out two batters over one inning pitched.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Garnet got rolling early, putting up two runs in the top of the first inning. After reaching base on an error, sophomore
Matthew Silvestre was hammered in by a Sullivan home run, giving Swarthmore an early 2-0 lead.
- However, the Bears quickly responded, notching one score in the first and three in the second to seize a 4-2 advantage over the Garnet.
- Swarthmore cut into Ursinus' lead in the fourth inning, with junior
Jett Shue crossing home after being batted in by a groundout from first year
Kaiden Rosenbaum. Continuing that offensive success in the fifth, Sullivan's second homer of the afternoon tied the contest at 4-all.
- Ursinus took back their lead in the bottom of the inning, as Swarthmore surrendered three scores, trailing the Bears 7-4.
- While both squads were held scoreless in the sixth, the Garnet rebounded in the seventh. After reaching on a balk, sophomore
Max Roffwarg rounded home off of a Silvestre double, narrowing Ursinus' margin to 7-5. Senior
Emmet Reynolds erased any remaining deficit with a towering shot over the fence, tying the game at 7-all with Swarthmore's third home run of the afternoon.
- While the Bears took back a 9-7 advantage in the seventh, the Garnet swung right back in the eight, as scores from Shue and senior
Nate Jbara evened the back-and-forth contest at 9-9.
- After blanking the Ursinus side in the bottom of the eighth, Swarthmore took a lead for the first time since the first inning thanks to a sacrifice fly from senior
Joe Radek that drove in sophomore
Benjamin Buchman, putting the Garnet up 10-9.
- Unfortunately, Swarthmore's advantage would not hold, as two decisive runs from Ursinus in the bottom of the ninth closed out the game with the Garnet falling 11-10.
- With the loss, the Garnet are 17-15, 6-6 in conference play.Â
