ALLENTOWN, PA. - Suffering their first loss to the Mules since 2017, the Swarthmore women's lacrosse team fell to Muhlenberg College by a score of 14-5 on Wednesday, Apr. 19.
Offensively, the Garnet were led by sophomore
Isabela Bloomquist, with the attacker tallying a team leading mark of two goals.
Guarding the net, junior
Helen Stafford had a stellar outing for Swarthmore, notching 11 saves while facing down 27 shots.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Garnet drew first blood early into the first quarter, with Bloomquist snagging a pass from senior
Francesca Richardson and hammering the ball into the back of the net, putting Swarthmore up 1-0.
- While two Muhlenberg goals gave the Mules their first lead of the game at 2-1, a shot from sophomore
Sophie Finkelstein found paydirt and tied the contest up at 2-all, a scoreline that held through the remainder of the first quarter.
- The second quarter saw three goals scored within the first two and a half minutes, as Muhlenberg found the back of the net twice and senior
Cassidy Marquis secured a goal for the Garnet. Despite the early offensive explosion however, both teams' defenses proved stout through the rest of the period, leaving the score stuck at 4-3 going into the half.
- The squads kicked off the second half trading goals, with Bloomquist taking full advantage of a free position shot to answer an early Mule score, shrinking the Garnet's deficit to 5-4.
- Unfortunately for Swarthmore, the game would go off the rails from there. The Mules would go on to score nine unanswered goals before senior
Elizabeth Zack finally stemmed the bleeding with 1:57 left to play. At that point however, Muhlenberg's lead proved insurmountable, as the Garnet fell 14-5.
