COLLEGEVILLE, PA. - Effectively bouncing back after a tough loss, the No. 20 Swarthmore men's lacrosse team took down Ursinus College by a score of 15-10 on Wednesday, Apr. 19.
Offensively, the Garnet were captained by junior
Von Mabbs, with the attacker notching team leading stats of four goals and two assists.
First year
Ryan Pretzer proved a rock in goal for Swarthmore, scooping up ten saves while facing down 37 shots from Ursinus.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Bears struck first, taking a 1-0 advantage just over two minutes into the contest. The Garnet answered nearly immediately however, tying the game at 1-all two minutes later off of a goal from junior
Carter Strauch, followed up by a
Von Mabbs' score just thirty seconds later to give Swarthmore their first lead of the game.
- While two more Ursinus goals captured them back the lead, a strike from first year
Rex Mabbs evened the score back up at 3-all, a line that held through the remainder of the first quarter.
- The Garnet came out swinging in the second period, with each Mabbs brother notching a goal to put Swarthmore up 5-3. While a Bear score with 5:39 left to play cut into the Garnet's lead, Swarthmore still sported a 5-4 margin headed into half.
- Both squads traded early goals to kick off the second half, as four screamers through the first five minutes of play kept the contest level at 7-6. A
Rex Mabbs score put the Garnet up 8-6, but that lead was immediately erased following two quick Ursinus attempts that found the back of the net.
- Not content to allow this back and forth to continue however, Swarthmore went on a run to close out the quarter. Goals from first year
Clay Almgren,
Von Mabbs, first year
Owen Hoffman and first year
Nolan Ohrman gave the Garnet their first commanding lead of the contest, putting Swarthmore up 12-8 going into the fourth.
- Ohrman kicked off the scoring in the fourth quarter, growing Swarthmore's advantage to 13-8 with 9:32 left to play. While Ursinus put up two goals in the final period, the Garnet's lead proved insurmountable, as Swarthmore left Collegeville with a dominant 15-10 win.
- With the victory, the Garnet are now 11-2, 5-1 in conference play.
