Softball Falls Short in Double-header at Ursinus

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. - The Swarthmore College softball team dropped both games of their double-header versus Ursinus College on Tuesday afternoon. The Garnet fell just short in a back-and-forth opening contest, 8-6, before dropping the finale in six innings.

Alexandra Simon and Olivia McClammy led the offense with a pair of RBI in the opener, while Kate Hart added a go-ahead solo home run in a tightly-contested battle of offenses. Swarthmore struggled to get things going in the finale, but were led by a pair of hits and an RBI from Iris Barone

HOW IT HAPPENED

- The Garnet started off strong with three runs in the opening frame. McClammy singled home two-runs to take an early advantage. Emily Bertrand then added another run on a single to center field, 3-0.

- After being shut down in the opening frame, the Bears bounced back with three runs over the next two innings to tie the game. Ursinus rallied for a pair of runs in the second before adding the tying score in the third, 3-3.

- Swarthmore responded in the fourth inning to retake the lead. Barone came through with a one-out double to start the rally, while Cassidy Cheong worked a walk in the following at bat. Simon then plated both runners with a double down the left field line, 5-3. 

- The Garnet were not able to get a shutdown inning in the bottom of the frame as the Bears answered with two runs to tie the game. Swarthmore would answer back once more in the fifth inning with a solo home run from Kate Hart to force another lead change, 6-5.

- Ursinus delivered the final blow with three runs in the bottom of the fifth. After a leadoff triple, the Bears tied the game with a ground out. They then retook the lead with a two-run single to left field, 8-6.

HOW IT HAPPENED

- Barone tripled to lead off the second game. Cheong then came through with a sacrifice fly on the following at bat to plate the game's first run, 1-0.

- Ursinus tied the game with a run in the first inning. The Bears then blew things open with five runs in the third to take a commanding lead over the Garnet, 5-1.

- The Bears added a run in the fourth inning to go up by six runs. Swarthmore then got the run back in the fifth with a single up the middle from Barone, 7-2.

- After adding a run in the fifth inning, Ursinus ended the game in the sixth with a pair of runs to expand their lead to eight, 10-2.
