SWARTHMORE, PA. - Seizing their third straight dual match win, the No. 20 Swarthmore women's tennis team took down Gettysburg College by a score of 8-1 on Sunday, Apr. 16.
The Garnet started out hot in doubles play, winning all three matches to go up 3-0 over the Bullets. Despite suffering an early setback in the No. 1 seeded match, Swarthmore rallied, taking the other five to secure their 8-1 victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Doubles:
- Swarthmore came out of the gate swinging in doubles play, taking a quick 8-2 win in the No. 3 seeded match thanks to excellent play from the duo of sophomore
Lara Geib/first year
Riya Rao.
- While the other two contests proved more competitive, the Garnet ultimately came out on top, with 8-6 victories from the pairs of first year
Kathleen Shiffer/junior
Spencer Watts and junior
Jenny Lewis/first year
Lisa Messier locking down Swarthmore's 3-0 lead going into singles.
Singles:
- The Garnet experienced a hiccup when Shiffer was forced to retire in the No. 1 slot, narrowing Swarthmore's lead to 3-1.
- Unphased however, Swarthmore got right back on track with their domination of Gettysburg, with Lewis (6-2,6-0), Messier (6-3,6-3), Geib (6-0,6-3), Rao (6-0,6-2) and Watts (6-0,6-0) all tallying straight set wins, securing the Garnet's 8-1 victory.
