Swarthmore Drops Double-header at Washington College

CHESTERTOWN, Md. - The Swarthmore College softball team dropped their double-header versus Washington College on Sunday afternoon. The Garnet fell short of a comeback with a 5-4 loss in the opener before falling 6-4 in the finale.

Alexandra Simon led the way in game two with all four of the team's RBI. The junior reached base four times - including a two-run homer for her first of the season. 

Brooke Coneeny also had an exceptional day at the plate as she hit a combined 4-for-4 with an RBI on the afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED

- The Shorewomen struck first with a home run in the first inning. The Garnet threatened with a pair of singles in the top of the frame, but were unable to get a run across.

- Washington added three runs in the third inning to take a commanding 4-0 lead. The Garnet then got a run back in the fourth inning after creating traffic on the base paths. After McClammy was hit by a pitch to open the frame, Emily Bertrand singled through the left side and Kate Hart reached on an error to load the bases. Grace Taylor then plated the team's first run with a sacrifice flyout, 4-1.

- Swarthmore tied the game in the sixth inning on three hits and three runs. Bertrand was hit by a pitch to spark a one-out rally, while Hart followed with a double to left field to put two runners in scoring position. Simon brought home the first run with a sacrifice fly before Taylor plated Hart with a double to left field. Coneeny then delivered another two-out RBI with a single to tie the game, 4-4.

- The Garnet comeback fell just short as Washington walked it off in the seventh inning with a two-out double to right field, 5-4.

HOW IT HAPPENED

- Swarthmore opened the scoring with a run in the second inning. Coneeny came through with a one-out single, which was followed by Avery McClure reaching on a hit by pitch to put two runners on base. Simon then plated Coneeny with a single down the left field line, 1-0.

- Lane Barron retired the side in order in the second and third innings to preserve Swarthmore's lead. The Garnet then added a pair of runs in the fourth on a two-run homer from Simon after McClure led off the inning with a double. Swarthmore put two more runners in scoring position during the inning, but couldn't add any insurance runs, 3-0.

- Washington added a run in the bottom of the fourth on a bases-loaded walk. However, Barron was able to limit the damage with an inning-ending groundout, 3-1.

- The Shorewomen put together a big inning in the fourth as they took the lead with three runs on four hits and an error. Molly O'Sullivan did an excellent job of limiting the damage with a pair of crucial outs to strand runners in scoring position, 4-3. 

- Washington added to their lead with two runs in the sixth inning to take a three-run advantage. Swarthmore threatened in the seventh with a pair of singles to open the frame, but were only able to get one run across on a Simon ground out, 6-4.
