GETTYSBURG, PA. - Securing their third straight Centennial sweep, the No. 28 Swarthmore men's tennis team took down Gettysburg College by a score of 9-0 on Thursday, Apr. 13.
While the No. 1 and No. 2 seeded doubles match proved close contests, the Garnet emerged from doubles play with three wins, sporting a 3-0 lead headed into singles matchups. Carrying their momentum into singles play, Swarthmore swept all six matches in straight sets, securing their 9-0 victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Doubles:
- Despite Gettysburg putting up a fight, the Garnet came out on top in tough matchups in both the No. 1 and No. 2 seeded matches, seeing wins from the duos of first year
Michael Melnikov/first year
Utham Koduri (8-5) and first year
Max Lindstrom/junior
Rushil Patel (8-6).
- Swarthmore's easiest win came in the No. 3 slot, when the pair of first year
Andres Fente/sophomore
Max Pogorelov took down their opponents 8-1.
- With the victories, the Garnet went into singles up 3-0.
Singles:
- Looking to firmly establish their hold of the contest, the Garnet rolled through their Gettysburg opponents in singles play, taking all six matches in straight sets. Swarthmore saw dominant wins out of Koduri (6-1,6-1), Patel (6-1,6-1), Lindstrom (6-1,6-2), first year
Lalith Suresh (6-3,6-0) and sophomore
Graham Hadesman (6-3,6-0).
- The Garnet's toughest battle came in the No. 1 seeded match. After winning the first set 6-2, Melnikov was forced into a second set tiebreaker. After splitting the first two points, the German native won three straight points to take a 5-2 lead, eventually coming out on top 7-4 and winning the set 7-6.
