FREDERICKSBURG, VA. - Competing in their penultimate non-conference match of the season, the No. 28 Swarthmore men's tennis team took down No. 34 Mary Washington College on Saturday, Apr. 15 by a score of 7-2.
Kicking off the dual match in convincing fashion, the Garnet claimed wins in two of the three doubles contests, headed into singles play up 2-1. Looking to effectively shut down their ranked opponent, Swarthmore took wins in five of the six singles matches, securing their 7-2 victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Doubles:
- Starting out strong, Swarthmore secured two wins in doubles play, seeing the duos of first year
Michael Melnikov/first year
Utham Koduri (8-5) and sophomore
Max Pogorelov/first year
Andres Fente (8-4) collect dominant wins in the No. 1 and No. 3 seeded matches respectfully.
- The Garnet's only loss came following a hard fought contest in the No. 2 slot, in which the pair of first year
Max Lindstrom/junior
Rushil Patel fell in a tie breaker by a score of 8[7]-7[1].
- With the success, Swarthmore carried a 2-1 lead into singles play.
Singles:
- Looking to further establish their dominant hold over the match, the Garnet roared into singles play, with Melnikov (6-2, 6-4), Suresh (6-4,6-3), first year
Aamish Pal (6-4,6-2) and senior
Josiah Myers-Lipton (6-2,6-2) all winning in straight sets.
- Swarthmore's toughest battle came in the No. 2 slot, where Lindstrom battled into a third set. After taking the first set 6-1, Lindstrom stumbled in the second, falling 6-0. Undeterred however, he rallied back in the final set, winning 6-3 and securing the Garnet's 7-2 victory.
