HAVERFORD, PA. - Playing in their penultimate away match of the season, the No. 20 Swarthmore women's tennis team defeated Haverford College by a score of 7-2 on Tuesday, Apr. 11.
Starting off strong, the Garnet took all three doubles matches, sporting a comfortable 3-0 lead over the Fords headed into singles. Swarthmore carried that success into singles play, winning all but two matches en route to a 7-2 win over Haverford.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Doubles:
- Despite the Fords putting up an early fight, the Garnet dominated in doubles play, seeing wins from the duos of first year

Spencer Watts/junior
Oviya Kumaran (8-6) and senior
Crystal Xu/first year
Lola Diaz (8-2) in the No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 seeded matches respectively.
- With the victories, Swarthmore carried a commanding 3-0 lead into their singles matchups.
Singles:
- Swarthmore suffered an early setback in singles play when Shiffer was forced to retire in the No. 1 slot, closing the Garnet's margin to 3-1.
- Undeterred, Swarthmore soldiered on, winning four of the remaining five matches. Kumaran (6-3,3-6,6-4), Diaz (6-3,7-5), junior
Daniela Padron-Castillo (6-3,5-7,6-2) and sophomore
Lara Geib (6-2,6-3) all notched points for the Garnet, securing their 7-2 win over the Fords.
- The Garnet's only other loss came when Messier fell in the No. 4 match by a score of 6-4,6-4.
