PORT CHARLOTTE, Fl - Playing in their final game of spring break, the Swarthmore baseball team lost to Misericordia University on Thursday, Mar. 9th by a score of 15-1.
Â
Offensively, the Garnet were led by senior
Nate Jbara, with the New York native recording a hit and Swarthmore's only run.
Â
From the mound, Swarthmore saw excellent performances from sophomore
Zach Potthoff and sophomore
Jack Bowling. Both pitchers recorded perfect innings, allowing zero hits and zero runs while earning a strikeout. Potthoff retired his side in nine pitches, while it only took Bowling eight to sit down his.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Garnet fell in a hole early, allowing four runs in the top of the first. While they were able to stabilize somewhat, not conceding another run until the fifth, Swarthmore's offense struggled to get going, not advancing a runner past third until the fourth inning.
- Swarthmore were finally able to put up a run in the bottom of the fourth. A massive triple advanced Jbara within scoring position, with the senior ultimately coming home on a wild pitch, closing Swarthmore's deficit to 4-1.
- Unfortunately, the Cougars responded in the very next inning, scoring two more runs and extending their lead to 6-1.
- While the Garnet had their chances to stage a comeback, recording two more hits on the day, they could not silence the Cougar bats, eventually falling to Misericordia 15-1.
- With the loss, the Garnet are now 5-5 on the season.Â
