Baseball Drops Pair to Middlebury, Alpern Impresses in Opener

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The Swarthmore College baseball team dropped both games of their seven inning double-header against Middlebury College on Sunday afternoon. The Panthers bested the Garnet with a late rally in the opener, 4-2, before closing out the afternoon with a 9-2 victory in the finale.

Liam Alpern tossed five shutout-innings in the opener for Swarthmore. The sophomore has excelled in the starting rotation with just one earned run in 13.0 innings of work early in the season.

Kaiden Rosenbaum launched his first collegiate home run in the opening game to headline the afternoon for the Garnet offense .

MIDDLEBURY 4, SWARTHMORE 2
HOW IT HAPPENED

- Swarthmore threatened in the opening frame after Austin Burgess reached base on a hit by pitch to start the inning. The senior swiped second base and advanced to third on a throwing error with one out, but was unable to reach the plate as he was left stranded at third.

- Alpern was excellent on the mound as he retired the side in order in the second, third and fourth innings. The sophomore then navigated out of a jam in the fifth inning as he stranded a pair of runners on base runners in scoring position. Alpern surrendered just two hits and struck out five batters in five scoreless innings.

- Rosenbaum led off the fifth inning with his first collegiate home run to put the Garnet on the board. The first-year lifted the ball over the left field fence as it just cleared the glove of a leaping left fielder, 1-0.

- The Garnet couldn't shut down the Panthers in the sixth inning as they allowed four runs in the frame. Swarthmore threatened in the seventh as they got a run across on an Xavier Taylor double, but were unable to overtake Middlebury.
