No. 29 Women’s Tennis Captures Win In First Match of Spring Break

FULLERTON, Ca. - Playing in their first of three spring break matches, the Swarthmore women's tennis team took down Hope International University by a score of 7-0 on Wednesday, Mar. 8th.

Starting off strong, the Garnet rolled through their doubles matches, capturing wins in all three and taking a 1-0 lead into singles play. Swarthmore carried that momentum into their singles matchups, seizing all but one in straight sets to secure their perfect 7-0 victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Doubles:
- The Garnet came out of the gate on fire in doubles matches, seeing statement wins from the duos of senior Crystal Xu/first year Kathleen Shiffer (8-5), junior Spencer Watts/junior Oviya Kumaran (8-6) and first year Lola Diaz/junior Daniela Padron-Castillo (8-4).

- With the three straight victories, the Garnet claimed the doubles point, going up 1-0 on the Royals headed into singles.

Singles:
- Swarthmore continued their domination of Hope International in singles play, claiming five of six matches in straight sets. Sophomore Nathalie Williams (6-3,6-1), junior Jenny Lewis (6-2,6-2), junior Erica Stutz (6-4,6-4), first year Lisa Messier (7-6[4], 6-2) and sophomore Lara Geib (6-3,6-3) all took points for the Garnet without dropping a set to their Royal opponents.

- The Garnet's biggest test came in the No. 6 seeded match, when junior Anna Miller won a grueling three set battle. After dropping the first set 6-3, Miller rallied, claiming the second 6-4 and the third 10-6, securing Swarthmore their 7-0 victory.

- The perfect win is Swarthmore's third of the season.
