FORT MYERS, Fl. - Taking on opponents from both Illinois and Pennsylvania, the Swarthmore softball team fell to University of Pittsburgh-Bradford 6-7 in their first game of the day, before taking down Rockford University 7-5 in their second.
First year
Iris Barone and sophomore
Olivia McClammy lead the way for the Garnet against Pittsburgh-Bradford, with each player putting up a stat line of two hits, two RBIs and one run.
Senior
Meg Ozawa dominated for Swarthmore in their matchup with Rockford, pitching 3.2 innings and allowing 0 earned runs while notching three strikeouts.
HOW IT HAPPENED - PITTSBURGH-BRADFORD
- Both squads were left scoreless through the first three innings, with junior
Molly O'Sullivan only giving up two hits while keeping the Panthers scoreless from the mound.
- The Garnet's first offense came in the top of the fourth, reaching first and second before ultimately stranding both runners.
- Swarthmore gave up their first runs in the bottom of the fourth, with Pittsburgh-Bradford taking a 4-0 lead over the Garnet.
- The Garnet were finally able to respond in the sixth. After singling to kick off the inning, Barone advanced to second on a fielding error, to third following a walk, and came home on a wild pitch, putting Swarthmore on the board at 4-1. Junior
Alexandra Simon put up the Garnet's second run on the next at bat, being driven in from second by a McClammy single and closing Swarthmore's deficit to 4-2.
- The Garnet were able to tie up the game at 4-all in the 7th, with Barone driving in sophomore

Kate Hart with a double to right center.
- Holding the Panthers scoreless in the bottom of the 7th, the Garnet were able to take their first lead of the game in the 8th. Simon was driven in by a McClammy single to put Swarthmore up 5-4, while McClammy reached home off of an RBI from first year
Avery McClure to extend the Garnet's run total to six.
- Failing to keep the Panthers at bay however, the Garnet surrendered two runs in the bottom of the 8th, allowing the game to be tied at six-all. Swarthmore were unable to recapture their advantage in the next inning, with a Pittsburgh-Bradford single ultimately taking the 7-6 win in the bottom of the ninth.

HOW IT HAPPENED - ROCKFORD
- While neither team was able to put up runs in the first inning, Rockford took a 3-0 lead by the third, tallying two runs in second and one in third.
- Despite their offensive struggles to start the game, the Garnet exploded in the bottom of the third, taking a 5-3 lead off of scores from Simon, Hart, McClammy, junior
Flannery McFadden and sophomore
Emily Bertrand.
- The Garnet extended their lead in the bottom of the fifth, going up 6-3 off of a single from first year
Rae Barron that drove in Bertrand.
- While Rockford pulled the contest within one at 6-5 in the top of the sixth, a final run for the Garnet in the bottom of the inning secured Swarthmore's 7-5 win.
- Ozawa dominated for the Garnet, surrendering zero earned runs and just three hits while notching three strikeouts on 3.2 innings pitched.
