Baseball Outlasts Adrian in Spring Break Opener

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. - The Swarthmore College baseball team outslugged Adrian College, 16-13, to open their spring break slate on Saturday afternoon.

Austin Burgess went 2-for-4 at the dish with a game-high four RBI in the victory, while Nate Jbara and Kaiden Rosenbaum each added three RBI. The Garnet combined for 16 hits and had eight different players drive home a run.

Rohan Cherukuri was excellent again in a winning effort out of the bullpen. The junior surrendered just one run in 2.2 innings of work while striking out three batters. Noah Potholm earned the start for the Garnet - surrendering three runs in 3.1 innings.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The game was high scoring from the start as both teams combined for seven runs in the opening frame. Swarthmore scored a pair on back-to-back walks by Kirk Terada-Herzer and Nate Jbara. Rosenbaum then plated a runner on a fielder's choice, while Terada-Herzer scored on a passed ball. Adrian then answered with three in the bottom of the inning, 4-3.

- Jbara added a sacrifice fly in the third to provide some breathing room. Swarthmore then put up a crooked four runs in the fifth inning. Rosenbaum plated the first pair with a single to center field, while Max Roffwarg drove home a run on a single to center and Burgess closed out the inning with a sacrifice flyout, 9-3.

- Adrian took their punches and kept battling back as they responded with a five-run bottom frame to shrink Swarthmore's advantage to just one run. The Bruisers were aided by a pair of home runs to spark their offensive outburst in the fifth inning, 9-8.

- Swarthmore added a run in the sixth and seventh to add to their total. Jbara plated the first run on a groundout, while Matthew Silvestre added a sac fly in the seventh, 11-8.

- The Garnet helped put the game away with a five-run eighth inning. Max Beadling brought home a run on a fielder's choice to open the scoring before Xavier Taylor added another run on a bunt single. Moments later, Austin Burgess provided the big hit with a three-run double to clear the bases, 16-8.

- Adrian kept chipping away with two runs in the eighth and three in the ninth to pull within three runs. However, Jack Fitzgerald shut the door with a swinging strikeout to silence the Bruisers.
