Swarthmore Outlasts Widener in Non-Conference Finale

SWARTHMORE, Pa - The Swarthmore College baseball team held on to defeat Widener University, 10-6, on Thursday afternoon.

Aidan Sullivan and Nate Jbara led the Garnet offense with two RBI and a pair of hits, respectively. Swarthmore tallied 10 hits on the afternoon and worked nine walks.

Joshua Rankey served as the opener as Swarthmore used seven pitchers to defeat the Pride. Rankey tossed two innings of one-run ball, while Alex Schoessler, Nick Baldev and Gabe Elliot followed with scoreless frames. Both Baldev and Elliot kept the opponent off the board in their collegiate debuts.

Casey Jordan provided some much-needed stability in the late innings as he held Widener scoreless in 1.2 innings of relief. Jack Fitzgerald then closed out the game with a scoreless ninth inning.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Widener opened the game with a two-out home run in the first inning to score the game's first run. The Garnet then had a response in the bottom half with a pair of runs to overtake the lead. Austin Burgess and Aidan Sullivan worked a pair of one-out walks to set up the scoring. Matthew Silvestre plated the first runner on a single up the middle, while Jbara brought home the second run with a sacrifice fly to center field, 2-1.

- Rankey got some help from his defense in the second inning. After allowing a one-out walk, Silvestre tossed out a baserunner at second for his eighth caught stolen base of the season. Kirk Terada-Herzer then ended the inning with a sliding catch in shallow center field. Swarthmore took advantage of a Widener mistake in the field, which allowed Burgess to reach second base with two outs. Sullivan then singled to left field on the following at bat to score Burgess, 3-1.

- Baldev struck out the side in his collegiate debut. The first-year allowed a pair of walks, but worked out of the jam with three strikeouts in the fourth inning. Jett Shue reached on a walk to start the bottom of the fourth, he then stole second base and advanced to third on a perfect bunt single by Max Roffwarg. After Burgess walked to load the bases, the Garnet added a run on a fielder's choice before tallying a couple more on a Jbara single and a Joe Radek sacrifice fly. Terada-Herzer then capped off the four-run frame with an RBI infield single, 7-1.

- Widener brought across two runs in the sixth inning to shrink their deficit to four runs. Swarthmore then countered with a run in the sixth on a Terada-Herzer single. The Pride later added two more runs in the seventh with a two-run homer, 8-6.

- Shue worked a walk to open the bottom of the seventh, while Roffwarg muscled a double high off the center field wall. Burgess then brought home Shue with a sacrifice fly, while Sullivan chipped one past the shallow infield to plate one more run, 10-6.
