Burgess Homers Twice in Centennial Opener Split

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The Swarthmore College baseball team split their Centennial Conference opener versus Franklin & Marshall College on a rainy Saturday afternoon.

The Garnet fell to the Diplomats 8-6 in the opener thanks to a couple crooked innings in the seventh and ninth. Swarthmore led early in the game with homers from Austin Burgess and Joe Radek, but were unable to close out the victory.

Swarthmore bounced back in the finale with a rain-shortened, 4-3 victory. Noah Potholm started five strong innings for the Garnet, while Burgess set up the first-year for victory with a go-ahead shot for his second home run of the afternoon. The senior slugger had a pair of hits, two home runs, two walks and four RBI on the day.

HOW IT HAPPENED

- After opening the game with a double, the Diplomats scored the game's first run on a ground out. Liam Alpern then settled down and escaped the inning with two-straight swinging strikeouts. He then coasted through an uneventful second and third inning for the Diplomats.

- The Garnet hung four runs in the bottom of the third inning to take the lead. After Max Roffwarg worked a lead off walk, Burgess homered to left-center field to take the lead. Radek then added another two-run shot in the inning to take a three-run advantage, 4-1.

- Alpern continued to run through the Diplomats lineup with a shutdown inning in the fourth and a 1-2-3 fifth frame. The reigning Centennial Pitcher of the Week was excellent again with six innings of one-run baseball with six strikeouts.

- Franklin & Marshall overtook the Garnet with a four-run seventh inning to take the lead. The Diplomats then added three more runs in the ninth to build a four-run advantage, 8-6.

- The Garnet kept battling until the end with two runs in the ninth inning. After the Diplomats walked the bases loaded, Aidan Sullivan reached on a fielder's choice to plate a run. Matthew Silvestre then singled to center field to add another run. The Garnet were able to cut their deficit in half, but were unable to complete the comeback.

HOW IT HAPPENED

- Noah Potholm navigated through an easy first two innings with limited traffic on the base paths. The Garnet then rewarded the first-year starter with a run in the bottom of the second inning. Radek opened the inning with a walk, while Jett Shue singled to right field to advance the junior to third base. Kaiden Rosenbaum then plated the run on a fielder's choice to give Swarthmore an early lead, 1-0.

- The Garnet ran into some trouble with a couple errors in the third inning as Franklin & Marshall added an unearned run to tie the game. Pottholm then bounced back to retire the Diplomats in order in a quick fourth inning.

- Franklin & Marshall took advantage of another error as they plated a pair of runs in the fifth to take the lead. Swarthmore then stormed back in the bottom of the frame with a game-tying, two-run homer from Burgess. The Garnet later regained the lead on a Silvestre single, 4-3.

- Jack Bowling tossed a couple scoreless innings for the Garnet. The sophomore provided some much-needed late inning stability with scoreless sixth and seventh innings. The game was then called in the middle of the eighth inning due to lightning in the area.
