Garnet Combine for No-hitter in Neumann Sweep

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The Swarthmore College softball team swept their second-straight double-header as they capped off the afternoon with a combined shutout in the finale over Neumann University on Sunday afternoon. 

Sarah Schab and Emily Bertrand tossed seven hitless innings in a 7-0 shutout for the Garnet. Schab earned her third win of the season in five innings of work, while Bertrand tossed two hitless innings to complete the no-hit bid.

Molly O'Sullivan was excellent in game one over five innings pitched. The junior allowed just one earned run and struck out seven batters to help secure the 10-6 victory in game one.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Neumann jumped out to an early 2-0 lead as they took advantage of some early Swarthmore mistakes in the first inning. O'Sullivan then bounced back with a 1-2-3 second inning to get the Garnet back on track.

- Grace Taylor singled in the Garnet's first run in the second inning. Swarthmore then took the lead on a two-run single by Jordan Jackson, 3-2.

- The Garnet hung five runs in the third inning to distance themselves from the Knights. Swarthmore took advantage of several Neumann's miscues in the inning. After loading up the bases, Swarthmore scored the first run on a wild pitch and then plated another run on a Bertrand single up the middle. The Garnet then scored another run on a wild pitch, which was followed by RBI singles from Taylor and Cassidy Cheong, 8-2. 

- After the Knights got a run back in the fifth, the Garnet added two more in the bottom of the frame on an Avery McClure two-run single up the middle. The first-year smoked a pitch up the middle to bring home Cat Reed and Iris Barone, who both singled to open the inning, 10-3.

- Neumann added two runs in the sixth and one in the seventh, but were unable to overcome their early deficit, 10-6.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Swarthmore took advantage of more Neumann mistakes as they brought across three runs in the opening frame. Barone walked to open the inning, stole second, advanced to third on a throwing error and then scored on a Reed ground ball for the game's first run. After another Neumann error, Swarthmore scored two more on back-to-back singles from Bertrand and Simon, 3-0.

- The Garnet added four runs in the fourth inning, which was aided by two more Knights errors. Barone made an excellent baserunning decision to steal a run on a Brooke Coneeny ground out. Swarthmore then added a run on a wild pitch before O'Sullivan singled home the team's sixth run. Before the inning was over, the Garnet scored another run on an error.

- Schab continued to run through the Knights lineup as she coasted through the fifth inning with ease. The sophomore struck out her final batter of the day swinging, before Bertrand closed the door with two hitless innings.
