COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. - Playing in their first Centennial Conference dual match since mid February, the Swarthmore women's tennis team downed Ursinus College by a score of 9-0 on Wednesday, Mar. 22.
Their fourth perfect win of the season, the Garnet started out hot in doubles play, taking all three matches by at least five points. Swarthmore carried that success into their singles contests, allowing Ursinus to win just five games across six matches, closing out their commanding 9-0 victory in just eighty minutes of play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Doubles:
- The Garnet dominated doubles matches from the get go, seeing wins from the duos of sophomore
Nathalie Williams/senior
Crystal Xu (8-3), junior
Anna Miller/first year
Lisa Messier (8-2) and first year
Kathleen Shiffer/junior
Daniela Padron-Castillo (8-1).
- With the victories, the Garnet earned a comfortable 3-0 lead over the Bears heading into singles.
Singles:
- Swarthmore did not slow down in singles play, continuing to assert their authority over Ursinus. Williams got the Garnet rolling in the no. 1 seeded match, capturing her 6-0, 6-1 win in quick succession.
- Three members of the Garnet achieved perfect victories in their respective matches. Shiffer, Messier and Miller all took down their opponents by a score of 6-0, 6-0, not allowing the Ursinus player to win even a game.
- Padron-Castillo (6-1, 6-1) and sophomore
Lara Geib (6-1, 6-0) closed out Swarthmore's flawless 9-0 victory with wins in the no. 3 and no. 6 seeded matches respectively.
