Game Recap: Softball |

First-Years Impress as Softball Sweeps Widener

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The Swarthmore College softball team got back on track with a double-header sweep over Widener University on Tuesday. The Garnet defeated Widener 7-2 in the opener, while outlasting the Pride, 3-2, in the darkness-shortened finale.

Lane Barron pitched one of the best games of her young career as she improved to 2-0 on the season. The first-year tossed six innings while allowing just one earned run and striking out a season-best five batters.

First-years Iris Barone and Avery McClure led the way for the offense with big performances at the plate. Barone went 3-for-5 on the afternoon with two runs scored and a double, while McClure hit 3-for-4 with two extra base hits and a run scored.

Olivia McClammy then came through with a two-out, pinch-hit single to put two runners on base. Emily Bertrand reached on an error to prolong the frame, while a run came home to score on a throwing error on the same play. Swarthmore then took the lead with a Molly O'Sullivan double to left-center field. The Garnet then added two more on singles by Alexandra Simon and Flannery McFadden to hang a crooked number on Widener, 5-2.

- Swarthmore plated a pair of runs in the fourth inning to add to their lead. Brooke Coneeny doubled to lead off the frame, while McClammy reached on a single to left field. Bertrand then drove home a run with a sacrifice fly, while McClammy scored on a sacrifice fly from O'Sullivan, 7-2.

- Barron escaped the fifth inning with a zero on the board after running into some trouble early in the frame. The Pride opened the inning with a single and then followed with a double to left field, but had their base runner from first base thrown out a third. Barron escaped the jam with a pop up and a strikeout looking to end the frame.
