SWARTHMORE, Pa. - Playing at home for the first time in nearly a month, the No. 32 Swarthmore women's tennis team took down No. 23 Hamilton by a score of 5-4 on Saturday, Mar. 18.
The Garnet started off slow in doubles play, dropping two of three matches and falling behind the Continentals 2-1. However, Swarthmore were able to turn their fortunes around in singles, coming out on top in four of six matches to squeak out a 5-4 victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Doubles:
- Despite pushing their matches within two points, the Garnet dropped both the No. 1 seeded match and the No. 2 seeded match, with the duos of sophomore
Nathalie Williams/senior
Crystal Xu and first year
Kathleen Shiffer/junior
Erica Stutz falling 8-7 and 8-6 respectively.
- Swarthmore were able to pick up a win in the No. 3 seeded match, with the pair of junior
Oviya Kumaran/junior
Spencer Watts topping their competition 8-6. With the win, the Garnet went into singles down 2-1.
Singles:
- Swarthmore exploded out of the gate in singles play, tying the match up at 2-all thanks to a dominant 6-0,6-2 rout from Williams.
- While Hamilton were able to take back the lead with a win in the No. 2 slot, the Garnet struck back in the No. 3 match, taking the point off of a dominant 6-4,6-2 performance from Stutz.
The Garnet took their first lead of the match off of a win from junior
Jenny Lewis in the No. 4 match. Lewis went the distance with her opponent, ultimately coming out on top 3-6,6-4,6-1.
- The Continentals tied the match for a third time following a win over first year
Lisa Messier in the No. 5 match. Unphased by the pressure, junior
Daniela Padron-Castillo kept her cool in the decisive No. 6 seeded match. Padron-Castillo fought through a grueling three set battle, ultimately coming out on top 6-2,4-6,6-2 and securing the Garnet their 5-4 win.
