SWARTHMORE, Pa. - Capturing their first win in nearly two weeks, the Swarthmore baseball team beat Misericordia University by a score of 13-9 on Thursday, Mar. 16.
Â
Offensively, the Garnet were led by senior
Austin Burgess, with the right fielder recording four hits, two runs and two RBIs on five at bats.
Â
From the mound, Swarthmore were held down by sophomore
Alexander Rimerman, as the righty pitched a perfect top of the ninth, allowing no hits, no runs and striking out two batters to secure his second save of the season.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Garnet fell behind early, surrendering eight runs in the first three innings. They were finally able to get on the board in the bottom of the third. Junior
Joe Radek was driven in from third by a single from sophomore
Max Beadling for Swarthmore's first run, while first year
Xavier Taylor reached home thanks to an RBI single Burgess, shrinking the Garnet's deficit to 8-2.
- After both teams were held scoreless in the fourth, Swarthmore put up another run in the fifth. Burgess slammed a triple to right center, driving Beadling across the plate to put the Garnet down only 8-3.
- Steadily chipping away at the Cougars' advantage, the Garnet scored three more times in the sixth. First year
Kaiden Rosenbaum brought sophomore
Matthew Silvestre home with an RBI single, ultimately scoring himself following a Radek homer.
- The Garnet finally took their first lead of the game in the bottom of the seventh, securing four runs from Burgess, Beadling, senior
Kirk Terada-Herzer and senior
Nate Jbara to go up 10-9 over Misericordia.
- Swarthmore secured their victory in the bottom of the eighth, notching three more runs to take a comfortable 13-9 advantage. Any hopes of a Misericordia comeback were snuffed out by the right arm of Rimerman, with the sophomore not allowing a hit in the top of the ninth to close out the game for the Garnet.
- With the win, the Garnet are 6-7 on the season.Â
