SWARTHMORE, Pa. - Suffering their first loss of the season, the Swarthmore baseball team was downed by Delaware Valley University on Wednesday, Mar. 1st by a score of 4-2.
Â
Offensively, the Garnet were led by sophomores
Max Roffwarg and
Matthew Silvestre, with Roffwarg recording two hits and a run from the leadoff spot, while Silvestre notched three hits and an RBI batting cleanup.
Â
On the mound, Swarthmore saw solid performances from junior
Rohan Cherukuri and sophomore
Alexander Rimerman. Cherukuri pitched two innings, striking out three and allowing just one hit, while Rimerman blanked Delaware Valley through two innings, not allowing a single hit while striking out four batters.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Roffwarg got things started early for the Garnet, singling in Swarthmore's first at bat. Silvestre then cracked one into right center, reaching second and bringing Roffwarg all the way home, putting the Garnet up 1-0.
- Delaware Valley put up two scores of their own in the top of the third, taking a 2-1 lead. The Garnet had a chance to respond, but Silvestre and senior
Nate Jbara were left stranded at first and second after junior
Jett Shue grounded into a double play.
- The Aggies increased their lead in the fourth, going up 3-1. Again, the Garnet had the opportunity to level the playing field, with first year
Kaiden Rosenbaum and Roffwarg making it to second and third respectively. However, with two outs, senior
Kirk Terada-Herzer could not drive his teammates in, popping up to third base to end the inning.
- The Garnet threatened once again in the bottom of the fifth, loading the bases with two outs. The Swarthmore offense fell short however, with junior
Joe Radek striking out looking.
- While Swarthmore's offense struggled, their defense held firm. Cherukuri and Rimerman shone especially on the mound, allowing zero earned runs between them over four innings pitched.
- While Delaware Valley extended their lead to 4-1 in the seventh, the Garnet were finally able to bring a runner home in the eighth, with Shue scoring off of a line out from senior
Emmet Reynolds.
- Despite closing their deficit to just two, the Garnet could not mount the comeback, eventually falling 4-2.
- With the loss, Swarthmore are now 2-1 on the season.Â
