Women’s Basketball Holds Off McDaniel in Important Conference Win

WESTMINSTER, MD. - The Swarthmore College women's basketball team took advantage of a fast start as they earned a key conference victory at McDaniel College, 52-42, on Thursday night. 

Dana Bandurick, Alyssa Hayashi and Anna Hansson all scored in double figures to lead the way. Bandurick led the way with 14 points and 14 rebounds for her second double-double of the season. Hayashi tallied 13 points with six rebounds and three assists for Swarthmore, while Hansson added 12 points. 

Hansson was also huge late in the game as she scored six points in the final three minutes of play. The first-year scored a pair of back-to-back buckets late in the fourth quarter to help hold off a rallying Green Terror. 



HOW IT HAPPENED
- Swarthmore got off to a fast start with a 15-2 run to open the first five minutes of the contest. All five of the team's starters scored during the opening five minutes with Hayashi scoring the final five points of the run. The Green Terror chipped away at the lead with an 8-5 advantage in the final five minutes, but still trailed the Garnet by ten after the first quarter, 20-10. 

- The Garnet quickly went up by 13 points to open the second quarter after a Carolina Lopez free throw and a bucket from Bandurick. McDaniel trimmed the lead to 10 points on several occasions, but were unable to pull any closer in the quarter. The Green Terror ended the stanza with a three-pointer to trim their deficit to 10 points heading into intermission, 32-22.

- Bandurick and Hayashi scored the first buckets of the second half to give the Garnet a game-high, 14-point advantage. The Green Terror trimmed their deficit back to 10 points before Hayashi connected from deep with 5:30 left in the quarter. McDaniel finally pulled within single digits after responding with consecutive buckets, 39-30. 

- The Green Terror threatened the Garnet's lead for the first time in the fourth quarter. McDaniel opened the final stanza with four unanswered points to pull within five points. They eventually cut their deficit down to two points with 4:40 left. Hansson added back-to-back buckets to provide the Garnet with some much-needed breathing room. The first-year scored six points in the final minutes of play to fight off the Green Terror's threat.
