Women’s Basketball Stumbles At Ursinus

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. - Splitting the season series 1-1, the Swarthmore women's basketball team fell to Ursinus College 60-56 on Tuesday, Feb. 7th.

Offensively, the Garnet saw double digit performances from four players, with senior Dana Bandurick (14), first year Anna Hansson (12), sophomore Alyssa Hayashi (11) and sophomore Norah Wingfield (10) all balling out for Swarthmore. Bandurick and Hayashi served as anchors on defense as well, with Bandurick notching six rebounds and three steals while Hayashi tallied four rebounds and four steals.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- While two consecutive baskets from Hansson got the Garnet on the board early, Swarthmore would struggle to put up points against the Bears, trailing by 14 at 22-8 with 1:34 left in the first quarter. Two free throws from first year Caroline Selinger and a Hayashi jumper would close that gap somewhat to close out the period, with the Garnet down 22-12 heading into the break.

- Swarthmore would turn their offensive fortunes around in the second quarter, closing their deficit to just six two and half minutes into the period. This success would continue, with buckets from Bandurick, Wingfield, Hansson, Kockenmesiter and first year Elisa Fiore being enough to tie the game at 29-all with 25 seconds to play in the half. However, Ursinus was able to regain their lead off of a buzzer-beating jumper, with the Garnet trailing 31-29 at the horn.

- The Garnet carried their offensive success into the second half, tying the game at 36-all four minutes into the third quarter. Three straight free throws from Bandurick then gave Swarthmore their first lead of the contest, putting them up 39-36 with four minutes left in the period. The Garnet were able to maintain that advantage into the end of the third, exiting the quarter up 45-43.

- Off of a basket from Bandurick and a triple from Hayashi, the Garnet were able to extend their lead to five three and a half minutes into the fourth quarter. While Swarthmore maintained their advantage through the majority of the period, an Urisnus layup with just 52 seconds remaining seized back the lead for the Bears at 53-52. While a Hayashi layup with 11 seconds to play kept the Garnet within striking distance, Swarthmore was unable to recapture the lead, eventually falling 60-56.
