SWARTHMORE, Pa. - Improving to 4-0 on the season, the Swarthmore women's tennis team took down Vassar College on Sunday, Feb. 26th by a score of 5-4.
The Garnet stumbled early, winning only one of three doubles matches, falling behind the Brewers 1-2 going into singles. However, Swarthmore were able to turn things around in singles play, winning four of six matches to come away with the 5-4 victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Doubles:
- The Garnet struggled in doubles play, falling in both the No.2 and No.3 seeded matches. Despite their best efforts, the duos of junior

Kathleen Shiffer could not pull a point for the Garnet, dropping their matches 8-3 and 8-7 respectively.
- Swarthmore's lone doubles win came off of a dominant performance from the pair junior
Erica Stutz/sophomore Natalie Williams, who downed their Vassar opponents 8-3.
Singles:
- Looking to stage a comeback early on in singles play, the Garnet got just the start they needed. Williams maintained her dominance in the No.1 seeded match, winning 6-1, 6-0 and tying the match up at 2-all.
- While Lewis fell 0-6, 1-6 in the No.2 seeded match, Shiffer pulled out a grueling three set victory for the Garnet in the No.3 match, winning 2-6, 6-3, 6-3 and tying the match once again, this time at 3-all.
- Stutz gave Swarthmore their first lead of the match with her 6-4, 6-0 win in the No.4 contest, securing the Garnet a one point advantage at 4-3.
- Despite Diaz falling in a heartbreaking three set marathon in the No.5 match at 2-6, 6-2, 3-6, Kumaran pulled through for the Garnet with a 6-7, 6-2, 6-1 three setter of her own, securing Swarthmore's 5-4 victory over the Brewers.
