POUGHKEEPSIE, NY - Dropping their first game of the season, the Swarthmore men's lacrosse team lost to Vassar College on Saturday, Feb. 25th by a score of 15-7.
Offensively, the Garnet were led by junior
Von Mabbs, with the Massachusetts native notching two goals and an assist on six shots. Swarthmore saw production across the board, with junior
Carter Strauch, sophomore
Cooper Bucklan, senior
Kevin Kurtz, first year
Nolan Ohrman and first year
Owen Hoffman all putting up goals of their own.
Defensively, first year
Ryan Pretzer held his own against a fierce Vassar attack, tallying 19 saves while facing 55 shots.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Both squads scored early to kick off the first quarter, with goals from Mabbs and Ohrman keeping the Garnet level with Vassar at 2-all halfway through the period. While the Brewers would end the first and open the second with two straight scores, Swarthmore would quickly respond, with Mabbs and Hoffman finding the back of the net just seconds apart to once again level the contest, this time at 4-all.
- However, Swarthmore were unable to maintain their offensive momentum, as three straight Vassar goals would give the Brewers a 7-4 lead with 6:01 left in the period. While a score from Bucklan got Swarthmore within two at 7-5, the Brewers would close out the half with two more goals, going into the break up 9-5 on the Garnet.
- Despite their best efforts, the Garnet were unable to keep up with the Vassar attack, with the Brewers scoring five more goals in the third quarter compared to Swarthmore's one. While a goal late in the fourth from Kurtz showed some signs of life in the Garnet, it proved too little too late, as Swarthmore fell 15-7.
