Baseball Explodes for 15 Runs in Opening Day Victory, Bowling Impresses in Return to Mound

ABERDEEN, MD - The Swarthmore College baseball team opened the season with a 15-4 offensive explosion against Lycoming College on Friday afternoon.

Kirk Terada-Herzer and Austin Burgess led the way with 2 RBI and a double, respectively. Terada-Herzer and Matthew Silvestre both had a team-high three hits on the afternoon as the Garnet tallied 15 hits as a team.

Bowling struck out seven of the 10 batters he faced in his return to the mound.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Max Roffwarg opened the first inning with a double before moving to third on a ground ball. Burgess then plated Roffwarg with a single to the shortstop. - The Warriors scored one unearned run in the second inning. In the third inning, Burgess reached base on a hit by pitch in the third. He then advanced to second on a throwing error and then recorded his second stolen base of the game as he swiped third. Burgess would touch home on a groundout by Silvestre, 3-1.

- The Garnet began to break things open with a four-run fourth inning. Emmet Reynolds worked a one-out walk to start the rally as he came home to score on a Kaiden Rosenbaum double to left field. Terada-Herzer then brought two more runs home with a two-out double down the left field line. Burgess later plated Terada-Herzer with an RBI double to left field, 7-1.

- Lycoming added a run in the fifth inning before the Garnet piled on for a combined eight runs in the sixth and seventh innings. Terada-Herzer added his second RBI with a single to right field to open the scoring. Silvestre then singled back to the pitcher to plate another run, while Swarthmore added two more on a balk and a wild pitch. Reynolds capped off the inning with an RBI single to right field to take a 10-run advantage, 12-2.

- The Garnet added three more insurance runs in the seventh inning. Burgess came home to score on a wild pitch, while the Garnet plated a pair on a fielder's choice, 15-2.
