SWARTHMORE, Pa. - Playing in their first two dual matches of the 2022-23 season, the Swarthmore women's tennis team took down Muhlenberg College 9-0 and Sweet Briar College 7-2 on Saturday, Feb. 18th.
HOW IT HAPPENED - MUHLENBERG
Doubles:
- Starting off the day strong, the Garnet secured three points off of three straight wins in doubles play.
- Swarthmore saw wins from the duos of sophomore Natalie Williams/junior
Erica Stutz (8-0), junior
Oviya Kumaran/junior
Spencer Watts (8-1) and first year
Lisa Messier/junior
Anna Miller (8-0).
Singles:
- Similar to their doubles matches, the Garnet saw overwhelming success in singles play, capturing six points off of six straight wins, securing their perfect 9-0 victory.
- Swarthmore saw flawless victories from the No. 1, No. 2 and No. 6 spot, with Williams (6-0,6-0), Kumaran (6-0, 6-0) and sophomore
Lara Geib (8-0) not dropping a game throughout their matches.
- While the Mules put up more of a fight in the No.3, No. 4 and No. 5 matches, the Garnet were still able to secure easy victories, with Miller (6-3, 6-0), Watts (8-1) and first year
Riya Rao (8-2) taking home victories for Swarthmore.
HOW IT HAPPENED - SWEET BRIAR
Doubles:
- Seeing continued doubles success, the Garnet secured two points in doubles play, going 2-1 against the Vixens.
- The duos of Williams/Stutz (8–2) and first year
Kathleen Shiffer/junior
Jenny Lewis (8-1) both secured wins in the matchups, while the pair of Kumaran/Watts dropped their game 8-7, giving Sweet Briar one of their two points.
Singles:
- The Garnet picked up five more points in singles play, en route to a 7-2 victory over the Vixens.
- Swarthmore captured wins in the No.1, No. 2, No. 3, No.4 and No.6 seeded matches, with Williams (6-2, 6-1), Shiffer (1-6, 6-0, 6-2), Stutz (6-1, 7-6), first year
Lola Diaz (6-0, 6-3) and Messier (8-2) all coming out on top.
- The Garnet's only loss came in the No. 5 seeded match, where junior Daniel Padron-Castillo fell 8-5.
