Third Quarter the Difference as Women's Basketball Falls To Ursinus

SWARTHMORE, Pa. – The Swarthmore College women's basketball team dropped a 74-53 decision to visiting Ursinus College in a Centennial Conference game on Wednesday.

The Garnet were in front entering the second half but a strong third-quarter performance by the Bears gave them the upper hand for good. Both teams struggled to take care of the basketball, combining for 42 turnovers. However, Ursinus made the most of its shots, converting at a 50.9% clip including a 50.0% rate from three-point range (10-of-20). Swarthmore was off the mark from three in particular, making just three of its 17 attempts from beyond the arc.

Carly Murphy paced the Garnet with 15 points. Anna Hansson (14) and Alyssa Hayashi (12) also scored in double figures.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The two sides went back and forth throughout the first quarter. There were three ties and seven lead changes during the period with the margin remaining three or less for the opening nine minutes. The Garnet trailed 13-11 before closing the frame with six straight points to take a 17-13 advantage into the second.

- The Bears bounced back to begin the second quarter, starting the stanza with a 12-2 run to take a 25-19 lead with 5:11 on the clock. However, Ursinus did not score the rest of the period as Swarthmore countered with the final eight points before intermission. Meanwhile, the Garnet's shooting touch went cold as they converted just one of their nine field goal attempts. The visitors held a 57-36 advantage at the end of the quarter.
