SWARTHMORE, Pa. – The Swarthmore College women's basketball team got out to a 19-3 lead in the opening quarter and never trailed on the way to a 68-48 victory over Rutgers-Camden at Tarble Pavilion on Saturday.
Dana Bandurick made her season debut for the Garnet and led the way with 16 points and 10 rebounds.
Anna Hansson also recorded a double-double, her second of the year, with 11 points and 11 boards. Swarthmore put away the Scarlet Raptors in the second half, shooting 53.8% over the final two quarters.
The Garnet's defense also shined, limiting Rutgers-Camden to just 23.8% from the field and pressuring the Scarlet Raptors into 25 turnovers.
Neve Yair registered a team-high four steals in the contest.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Swarthmore started strong with 19 of the opening 22 points to establish an early lead. The Garnet shot 8-of-16 during the stretch with seven players scoring during the run. On the defensive end, Swarthmore contained the Scarlet Raptors to just 1-of-11 from the field.
- Rutgers-Camden started to find a rhythm and came back with a 10-2 run to get within eight (21-13) with 7:39 left in the second quarter. After the Garnet built the advantage back to 13 (27-14), the Scarlet Raptors rallied for eight of the next 10 to cut the deficit to five (27-22) with 1:27 to go in the half. However, Swarthmore closed the period with eight straight points to lead by 13 at the break.
Vanessa Amsinger tallied five of the Garnet's eight points.
- The margin was 13 once more (43-30) at the 6:55 mark of the third. Swarthmore pulled away with a 9-5 stretch to end the period, taking a 52-35 advantage into the fourth. Rutgers-Camden was able to close the gap to 13 again (52-39) with 8:46 to play but the Garnet answered with another 8-0 surge to put the game out of reach.
