CARLISLE, Pa. – The Swarthmore College women's basketball team could not recover from a slow start and had its three-game win streak snapped with a 65-46 loss at Dickinson College in Centennial Conference action on Saturday afternoon.
After the Garnet scored first, the Red Devils rattled off 18 unanswered points and did not trail for the remainder of the contest. Dickinson shot 50.0% from the floor while Swarthmore converted at just a 37.0% clip despite a strong third quarter.
Alyssa Hayashi led the Garnet with 15 points and
Anna Hansson added 10.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Garnet netted the first basket of the game at the 9:17 mark but struggled the rest of the opening quarter. Swarthmore went 0-for-9 from the field over the last nine minutes of the period as the Red Devils shot 7-of-10 and tallied 16 straight points.
- Dickinson scored first in the second quarter to up its run to 18 in a row before the Garnet broke their scoring drought with a pair of free throws at the 7:47 mark. However, the Red Devils came back with a 10-2 surge to increase their lead to 22 (28-6) with 4:35 on the clock. Swarthmore made up three points in the closing minutes of the half but still trailed 32-13 at the break.
- The Garnet came out strong to begin the third quarter, producing the first nine points of the period to get within 10 (32-22).
Vanessa Amsinger led the stretch with five points and Hansson scored four. However, Dickinson responded with a 12-3 run to erase Swarthmore's efforts and make it 44-25. The Garnet were able to cut the deficit to 12 (48-36) entering the fourth.
- Swarthmore trailed by 10 (50-40) early in the final stanza but the Red Devils pulled away again with a 9-2 stretch that ended at the 4:36 mark. The Garnet were unable to get closer than 14 the rest of the way.
