SWARTHMORE, Pa. – The Swarthmore College women's volleyball team dominated its Centennial Conference first round matchup against Haverford College on Wednesday night, downing the Fords by a 3-0 score.
The fourth-seeded Garnet controlled the match from the opening serve and never let up. Swarthmore hit .315 for the match while fifth-seeded Haverford managed just a .130 attack percentage. The Garnet swung over .300 in two of the three sets.
Angelina Heminway amassed a career-high 15 kills to lead Swarthmore. She hit an outstanding .542 and added four service aces, which was also a career best, and three blocks.
Jordan Perry tallied 12 kills with a .300 attack percentage.
Dani Pena contributed with 34 assists and eight digs while
Ellie Streeper paced the squad with 20 digs.
The Garnet advance to the conference semifinals for the ninth straight season and will travel to top-seeded Johns Hopkins University on Friday for a 7 p.m. match.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Garnet held a 3-2 lead in the opening set before pulling away with seven straight points. Heminway and Perry each had two kills during the stretch. After the Fords scored the next two, Swarthmore went on an 8-1 run to increase its advantage to 13 (18-5). Heminway recorded three kills and two service aces to spark the surge and the Garnet went on to take the set 25-13.
- Haverford was ahead by one (5-4) early in the second when Swarthmore got hot again, rattling off 10 of the next 11 to take a commanding 14-6 lead. Heminway registered two more aces to go along with a kill and
Kaylee Zhang added a pair of kills. After two points by the Fords, the Garnet posted a 9-1 rally to up the margin to 14 (23-9). Zhang tallied two aces and Streeper had one. Swarthmore eventually claimed the frame 25-13.
- The Garnet got out to a 3-1 advantage in the third but Haverford remained within striking distance for several points. The score was 14-11 before Swarthmore was able to create separation, scoring seven in a row to make it 21-11.
Alexia Enache dropped in two aces and Perry totaled two kills. The Garnet were able to put away the Fords with a 25-15 victory.
