Volleyball Falls to Hopkins in Centennial Semifinals

BALTIMORE - The Swarthmore College volleyball team dropped a three-set battle at Johns Hopkins University in the Centennial Tournament Semifinals on Friday night.

Angelina Heminway led the attack with six kills and a .267 hitting percentage, while Trisha Razdan and Kaylee Zhang also contributed six kills. Ellie Streeper held things down on the defensive end with a match-high 23 digs and Zindzhi Montgomery added a couple blocks.

Swarthmore kept the game close in all three sets, but were unable to piece together a late rally to overtake the Blue Jays. Johns Hopkins out-swung the Garnet with a .266 hitting percentage, while Swarthmore hit just .071. The Blue Jays also held an 8-2 advantage in blocks.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Johns Hopkins pulled ahead early in a tightly-contested opening set as it took a 10-5 lead. Following a timeout, the Garnet answered back with a Heminway kill and an ace to spark a 4-1 swing for Swarthmore. The Garnet kept fighting as they eventually knotted the game on a Zhang kill, 17-17. Swarthmore was unable to capture the lead, but tied the game on two separate occasions until the Blue Jays distanced themselves with a 25-21 win.

- Swarthmore enjoyed a lead early in the second set after rallying for three-straight points. Jordan Perry capped off the run with a kill, before answering a Blue Jay point with another kill, 8-7. After Hopkins pulled ahead by a point, Swarthmore capitalized on some Blue Jays' mistakes as it pieced together a 5-2 run to take a two-point advantage, 13-11. Following a Hopkins' timeout, the Blue Jays captured momentum with a 7-1 run to retake control, 18-14. Swarthmore battled back late in the set, but were unable to recover from Hopkins' late run, 25-19.

- Heminway tallied three consecutive kills to help the Garnet take an early lead in set three. Perry then put the Garnet ahead by two with a service ace. 11-9. Johns Hopkins turned momentum in its favor with four-straight kills to flip the score, 14-12. Swarthmore battled back to tie the game on a Perry kill, but surrendered three-straight points to fall behind once more, 18-15.
