Women’s Basketball Outlasts Muhlenberg in Centennial Opener, Murphy Drops 21 Points

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The Swarthmore College women's basketball team held off Muhlenberg College, 55-53, to earn the victory in its home opener and Centennial Conference opener on Tuesday night.

Carly Murphy introduced herself to the conference with a career-high 21 points and four rebounds. The first-year totaled double-digits for the first time this season as she paced the Garnet offense on 8-of-17 shooting.

Anna Hansson provided the deciding bucket for the Garnet when she gave her team the lead with 58 seconds left for the game's final lead change. Swarthmore edged out the Muhls in a tightly-contested showdown that featured four lead changes and four ties.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Garnet opened the game with 11-straight points as they held Muhlenberg scoreless until the 3:37 mark. Hansson scored six points in the opening run, while Alyssa Hayashi added a spark with an and-one layup. Swarthmore held the Muhls to a season-low five points in the opening stanza to take a 10-point advantage, 15-5.

- The Muhls shot 75-percent from the field in the second quarter to capture momentum. Muhlenberg set the tone early with a three-pointer to open the stanza as they rallied for an 18-7 run to take its first lead, 23-22. The Muhls led by as many as five in the quarter until Murphy drained a triple to pull the Garnet within two points before the end of the half, 29-27.

- Neve Yair opened the third quarter with a jumper to tie the game, while Murphy scored on consecutive possessions to put Swarthmore in front, 33-31. The Muhls responded to tie the game, but Murphy answered once again with a three-point play to put the Garnet ahead with 6:17 left. Later in the quarter, Murphy opened a 7-0 run with a jumper before Elisa Fiore added a layup and Vanessa Amsinger drained a three to take an eight-point lead. Muhlenberg added a late bucket as the third came to an end to pull within six points, 45-36.

- Muhlenberg pulled within four points early in the final stanza until Murphy quieted down the Muhls with a much-needed long ball at the 3:29 mark. However, the Muhls refused to back down as they ended up taking the lead with 1:19 remaining. Hansson then answered the call as she provided Swarthmore with a go-ahead bucket on the team's following possession. Yair split a pair at the free throw line to increase the team's lead to two points, while the defense swarmed Muhlenberg in the final minute to preserve its late lead, 55-53.
