Women’s Basketball Captures First Win in Weekend Finale Over Maryville

ATLANTA - The Swarthmore College women's basketball team earned its first victory of the season with a 59-49 victory over Maryville College on Sunday afternoon.

Anna Hansson tallied a double-double with 13 points and 13 rebounds as she headlined a trio of double-digit scorers. Alyssa Hayashi scored 12 points with seven rebounds, while Norah Wingfield added 10 points off the bench on 5-of-7 shooting. 

Neve Yair stuffed the stat sheet in a well-rounded performance for Swarthmore. The first-year had nine points with 10 rebounds, five assists and five steals while shooting 7-of-8 from the foul line. Yair recorded season bests in every stat category. 

As a team, the Garnet out-rebounded their opponent 51-38. Swarthmore also held a 31-10 advantage in points off turnovers. 

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Garnet would not be denied on their first possession as the team grabbed three offensive rebounds before Hansson laid the ball in for the game's first points. Yair then knocked down a layup, while Hayashi split free throws to take a 5-2 lead. Both teams exchanged baskets later in the quarter until Swarthmore rallied for five-straight points. Carolina Lopez knocked down a jumper, while Vanessa Amsinger drained a three ball to put the Garnet ahead by five points. Swarthmore ended the opening stanza up three points, 18-15. 

- Hayashi hit a pair of jumpers to open the second quarter. However, the Scotts captured the lead with consecutive three-pointers. Yair then tied the game with a couple free throws, while Hayashi put Swarthmore back ahead with a layup with 3:59 left. After Maryville retook the lead, the Garnet rallied for five-unanswered points as they ended the half with a two-point advantage, 33-31. 

- Maryville took a four-point lead early in the third quarter after opening with an 8-2 run. Wingfield then responded with three-straight baskets to put Swarthmore ahead with a 6-0 run. Swarthmore ended the stanza with a one-point lead after Carly Murphy split a pair at the line, 44-43.

- The Garnet scored four-straight points as they began to distance themselves midway through the fourth. Swarthmore held its opponent scoreless for the final 4:51 as the Garnet ended the game on a 7-0 run.
