Women’s Basketball Drops Season Opener at Widener

CHESTER, Pa. - The Swarthmore College women's basketball team dropped its season opener at Widener University, 57-48, on Wednesday night.

Alyssa Hayashi was the lone Garnet scorer in double figures with 10 points, while Norah Wingfield and Carly Murphy added eight, respectively. Anna Hansson had a dominant showing on the defensive end with a career-high five blocks to go along with eight rebounds.

Widener's defense made things difficult for the Garnet as they held them to 30.6 percent from the floor and won the turnover battle 20-14. Free throws also played a deciding factor with Widener earning 24 free throw attempts to Swarthmore's 11 attempts.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Hayashi started the season off hot with a three-pointer on the team's first possession. Wingfield then put the Garnet ahead by three with a layup, before the Pride countered with seven-unanswered points, 9-5.

- Later in the opening quarter, Widener expanded its lead to five points until T Sallie connected from long range with 2:39 remaining. Moments later, Wingfield added a driving layup to tie the game, 14-14. Carolina Lopez then regained the lead for Swarthmore with 1:05 remaining. However, the Pride ended the final minute on a 5-0 run to pull ahead, 20-16.

- Widener held the Garnet offense in check for most of the second quarter as it expanded its lead to 29-20 with 1:05 left. Swarthmore made up for its slow start in the final minute of play as it trimmed its deficit in half with a 5-0 rally. Wingfield knocked down a jumper to start the run, while Hayashi sent the Garnet into halftime with a three ball, 29-25. The Garnet went without a free throw for the entire first half, while Widener went 7-of-10 from the charity stripe.

- Hayashi tallied her 10th point of the contest with a floater to pull Swarthmore within four points at the 7:19 mark. Later in the quarter, Carly Murphy knocked down a pair of free throws as the team stepped to the line for the first time all game. Murphy then added another pair to pull within five points with 2:05 left. The Pride answered with a pair at the foul line as they took a 41-35 lead into the final quarter.

- Widener began to distance themselves with the opening seven points of the fourth quarter, 48-35. Sallie gave the Garnet a spark late in the quarter after securing an offensive rebound and putting back the and-one tip for a three-point play, 52-42. Neve Yair showcased her skills with a couple buckets late in the quarter, but the Garnet were unable to climb back into the game as they fell 57-48.
