Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

DeAngelo Banks Three-Pointer to Complete Comeback Over No. 9 NYU

NEW YORK - The No. 11 Swarthmore College men's basketball team stormed back to defeat No. 9 New York University, 71-70, on a Vinny DeAngelo three-point, buzzer-beater to complete a wild comeback on Sunday night.

After a missed free throw from the Violets, DeAngelo advanced the ball up court with four seconds remaining. The senior then drilled a long ball from the right wing as time expired to secure the team's first victory of the season. The Violets had previously led by double digits with 4:40 remaining in regulation.

Michael Caprise led the Garnet for the second-straight game with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Eddie Paquette and DeAngelo scored in double figures with 11 points, while first-year Nyle Coleman added 10 points.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- After trailing by five points early in the first half, Devin Burger sparked a six-point run with a free throw. Caprise then cashed in a layup, while Paquette drained a triple to put Swarthmore in front for the first-time, 13-12.

- The Violets built their lead to five points late in the half until Swarthmore answered back to tie the game with 1:39 left. Coleman started the five-point swing with a jumper, while Paquette added another three-pointer to tie the game, 27-27.

- Caprise gave Swarthmore a late first-half lead with a jumper in the paint with 1:05 left. Following an answer from NYU, the senior added another layup to put Swarthmore ahead by two points. The Violets then drilled a last-second three to take a lead into intermission, 32-31.

- NYU led for most of the second half as it built its lead to a game-high 13 points with 7:46 remaining. Cal Hanson helped stop momentum with a much-needed layup to stall a five-point Violets' swing before Caprise knocked down a three-pointer to pull within eight points with 5:04 left.

- The Violets pulled ahead by nine points with 3:41 left as NYU remained in control for nearly the entire half. Paquette provided resistance with a pivotal three-ball for his third of the game. The sophomore has shot 5-of-10 from deep this season as he tallied double-digit points in consecutive games for the second time in his collegiate career.

- Trailing by six points with a minute remaining, Coleman trimmed the team's deficit to four points with a pair of free throws at the 47-second mark. After the Garnet forced a turnover on the defensive end, Caprise buried a three to pull within one point with 17 seconds remaining, 67-66.

- The Violets appeared to have the game under control as they used an offensive rebound to cash in on three-of-four free throw attempts to take a two-possession lead, 70-66. Coleman gave the Garnet hope with a quick bucket to shrink their deficit to two with six seconds left. After a missed free throw from the Violets, DeAngelo advanced the ball up court with four seconds remaining and banked a game-winning, three-pointer off the glass to steal a victory from the home Violets. The Garnet benched stormed the court in celebration as they captured their first win of the 2022-23 campaign.
