RADNOR, Pa. – Eddie Paquette recorded the first triple-double for the Swarthmore College men's basketball team in 16 years and the 11
th-ranked Garnet shot 55 percent in the second half to erase a halftime deficit and defeat Cabrini University on the road, 82-76, on Wednesday night.
Paquette finished with 10 points, 12 rebounds, and 10 assists to become the first Swarthmore player to accomplish a triple-double since Ian McCormick on November 28, 2007.
Michael Caprise added a game-high 19 points for the Garnet with
Cal Hanson (18) and
Nyle Coleman (12) also scoring in double figures.
The Cavaliers shot 50 percent (14-of-28) in the first half to build a three-point halftime lead. However, Swarthmore rallied back in the second and was dominate down low as 24 of its 47 second-half points came in the paint. Hanson led the way with 13 points and Paquette tallied 10 points and nine rebounds in the second period alone.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The score was tied at nine early on when Cabrini went on a 7-0 run to go in front with 14:07 on the clock.
- Trailing 22-15, Caprise produced seven straight points for the Garnet to even it up at 22 with 8:08 to go.
- The two squads went back and forth for the remainder of the first half with two more ties over the final eight minutes. Deadlocked at 35, the Cavaliers drilled a three with 43 seconds to go and took a 38-35 advantage into the locker room.
- Cabrini was ahead by five (42-37) early in the second half when Swarthmore gained the hot hand, pouring in nine points in a row to take a 46-42 lead with 16:33 remaining, its first since the 18:20 mark of the first half.
Vinny DeAngelo scored four points, Hanson hit from beyond the arc, and Coleman chipped in with a jumper.
- The Garnet led by as many as eight (58-50) but the Cavaliers got back in it with an 11-3 surge to even it up at 61 with 6:54 left. It was the first of four ties over the next 3:50 of game time.
- Paquette sank a jumper and completed the and-one to put Swarthmore ahead 71-70 with 3:04 to go. Hanson followed with a steal and a layup to increase the lead to three. Paquette came up with a block on the defensive end but Cabrini got the ball back and drew a foul. However, the Cavaliers missed both shots and Hanson grabbed the board.
- Caprise converted a shot to put the Garnet up five (75-70) with 2:08 on the clock. Cabrini had chances to climb back down the stretch but shot just 1-for-6 from the field the rest of the way as Swarthmore went 5-for-7 at the line to put the game away. Paquette's free throws with 20 seconds to play pushed him to 10 points to secure the triple-double.
