Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

No. 11 Men’s Basketball Drops Season Opener to No. 22 Washington

NEW YORK - The No. 11 Swarthmore College men's basketball team dropped its season opener versus No. 22 Washington University, 76-56, at the NYU Scholars Classic on Saturday night.

The Bears had the hot hand all night as they shot 57.4 percent from the field. The Garnet offense was led by Michael Caprise and Eddie Paquette, who scored 16 and 14 points, respectively. Caprise was 8-for-11 from the field with a team-high five rebounds.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Paquette tied the game early in the first quarter with a three pointer. The Garnet took the lead on a Vinny DeAngelo layup with 15:44 to play in the opening half, but Washington countered with 10-unanswered points to take an eight-point advantage, 19-11.

- After falling behind by 10 points, the Garnet made up ground with a four-point possession. Caprise fought through contact to make a layup, but missed his ensuing free throw, which was rebounded and put back by Paquette. Cal Hanson then added a three-pointer and a layup on consecutive possessions to pull within three points with nine minutes left, 26-23.

- Washington finished the opening half on a 14-6 run to take an 11-point lead at intermission, 40-29. The Bears shot 63 percent from the field in the opening stanza, while the Garnet hit just 40 percent. Washington did most of its damage from short range with 30 of its 40 points coming inside the paint.

- Swarthmore began to cut into the Bears' lead at the start of the second half. Caprise trimmed the team's deficit to 10 points with a baby hook. Matt Mulvey then followed up a Washington bucket with a three-pointer before DeAngelo nailed a jumper to pull within seven points, 49-42.

- Devin Burger trimmed Swarthmore's deficit to five points with a three-pointer. The Bears then countered with a triple of their own, before Paquette nailed a three to bring the team back within five points, 53-48.

- The Bears gained separation with 16-straight points to pull away from the Garnet. Matt Mulvey ended Washington's run with a midrange jumper to pull within 20 points, 70-50.
